Ibiza-based DJ/producer sexing up the sound of the underground
Who Paola Poletto, 36, from Turin, Italy but living in Ibiza
Sounds like House and techno beats with soft textiles and rhythm
When Italian DJ Paola Poletto moved to London in 1996 she wasn’t so familiar with a certain party island known as Ibiza. But when Italian promoters Made In Italy invited her to play there she fell in love – and never looked back. “The first time I arrived there I didn’t know anything about it,” she says. “Now it’s my life.”
Sixteen years later and she’s played in almost every Ibizan club and has long made it her permanent home, living there all year round with her husband and dog. “I remember getting off the plane and seeing the colours in the sky and feeling the call,” she says. “I love winter because it’s quiet, and there’s lots of nature and you can feel the pure energy of the place. It was too cold living in London!”
In 2012 she’ll be branching out beyond her Ibizan haven with EPs due (with production partner Francisco Allendes) on Steve Lawler’s Viva and German label Desolat, and she’s also launching her own label, Aurora Indigo, on which she’ll showcase her sexy underground house and techno sounds to a wider audience – especially girls. “Ladies need to feel a sexy vibe. If I see them dancing I know I’ve got the mood right. House and techno should be sexy!” she says. And if the female contingent are into her sounds, you can bet the guys will be too.
Paola’s ‘Indigo EP’ with Francisco Allendes is out now on Viva Music. Her Aurora Indigo label launches at the end of this month
