Thanks to its star headliners and long-running nights, The Warehouse has an assured party legacy running right back to 1979. Tonight, though, a bold new party concept called Coloursound aims to bring the newly refurbished space bang up to date. It’s only just gone midnight, but already things look good for The Warehouse 2.0.
“We had to open early because of how many guests we’ve booked,” says promoter Alex Jukes. “But we’ve been buzzing since the start.” As we talk, one of the nine headline-sized acts drops another squared-off tech-house beat, punching the air excitably as he goes. It’s One Records’ Jordan Peak, and his boundless energy is stirring those in front of him to dance still harder at what’s now a heaving party.
The venue’s had a brush-up, the DJ booth now raised and moved to one side. “It’s much more intense – like a steamy techno cauldron!” one punter says. A punchy new Funktion One helps the cause, as do the lights and lasers that swirl above as Tiefschwarz takes us down a deeper techno path. Layering trippy synths and freaky vocal snatches, he also mixes in the odd recent classic, ensuring everyone from the trendiest cat to the most serious head gets their fill: Coloursound’s MO in a nutshell.
Upstairs, The Loft is a smaller space where deep, stripped-down house beats are dropped by Huxley and Russ Yallop all night long. It’s our guess that tonight’s packed and buzzing party is indicative not only of Coloursound’s prospects, but of the renewed excellency of The Warehouse.
